Recently, a woman who lives in Vancouver and walks a dog home was attacked by a raccoon, leaving deep wounds on her legs and wrists. Dissatisfiedly, the attitude of local officials was very negative, indicating that they would not take any measures.
According to the English-language media, Global News, this incident occurred last Friday morning at around 11.30 a.m. when the woman from Vancouver, Salete Morgadinho, was walking with a puppy.
Upon her return, she found a group of raccoons gathered by the fountain in the yard to bathe and enjoy themselves. The dog on the side was the first to see a raccoon, and he got nervous and screamed.
After hearing the barking of the dog, the raccoon was dissatisfied with being disturbed and began to attack the dog. Morgadinho was in a bad position to pull up a dog rope and hold the pet dog in his arms and protect it from raccoons.
It was not surprising that the raccoon, who was in a bad mood, had gnawed over the leg of Morgadinho, and that she was instinctively kicking the raccoon and trying to scare it away. But this move provoked the raccoon's accomplices. Soon another raccoon came at her!
In a hurry, Morgadinho beat the raccoon with his hand, but the raccoon did not stop, bit her calf and scratched her wrist.
Morgadinho had to flee her home and close the yard door to protect herself from the raccoons, but the raccoons refused to let her go, drilled out through the cracks and continued to attack until the neighbours heard the cry for help and threw stones at the raccoons!
Morgadinho states that the raccoon bites very hard and that “I am very badly wounded, especially when I kick it, it bites my leg dead and it bites in the same position, leaving a very large wound which the doctor says may never be removed”.
Morgadinho was still being treated at the hospital, but the incident caused her great bodily and psychological harm.
"I can't remember that image, and I feel like they're gonna bite me." Morgadinho remembered that moment, and it was hard even to sleep.
Moreover, this is not the first time that their family has been attacked by raccoons. Two weeks ago, the raccoon bit her pet dog in her garage and the raccoon bit her leg when Morgadinho ran out and tried to pull the dog back. It left deep blood holes and scratch marks on her leg!
After the incident, Morgadinho contacted government officials for help, but the other party ignored and told her that she needed to call private animal control agencies.
“If today's events happen to a child, the situation will be even worse. If a raccoon bites a dog, it could be dead already.” Morgadinho's son said.
In addition to this experience, which has frightened her, the reaction of officials in the province of BC to the matter is unsatisfactory.
Morgadinho said that when she called for help, she was told that it was not the raccoon's responsibility, because the raccoon had come first. “I've been paying taxes for 47 years. Does a raccoon also pay taxes?”
