The re-emergence of the Heilong River in the North-East Tiger has raised tensions and concerns among the local population. It was reported that the north-east wild tigers were found in Tiger Head Town and Ilan County, Harbin City, both of Heilongjiang Province. Villagers found their dog bit by a tiger, while villagers found a cow bit by a tiger.
In order to ensure the safety of the population, the local authorities issued emergency circulars advising residents to avoid going out. These events once again generated reflection and discussion on the relationship between wildlife and human beings. It was reported that Li Jianhai, of Tiger Head Town, Hoi Lin City, Heilongjiang Province, had found his dog bit by a tiger, leaving only his head. Li Jianhai suspected that the killer who bit the dog was a tiger because he found traces of the tiger near his home. Since then, the persons concerned have come to Li Jianhai ' s home to check and confirm the whereabouts of the tiger. This incident raised concerns about the intersection of wildlife and human life. On the other hand, the north-east wild tiger was found in the Ilan district of Harbin city. A villager reportedly met a “tiger” on the hill and found a cow bit to death. The local authorities immediately issued an emergency circular prohibiting people from entering the mountains in order to avoid encounters with the giant beast.
An analysis of the footprints and traces on the ground confirmed that this was a Northeast tiger. This incident is yet another reminder of the potential conflict between wildlife and humans. The frequency of wild north-east tigers has increased in recent years. For example, in 2021, wild north-east tigers entered the city of Misan in Heilongjiang Province. In 2022, the public security substations of Fonglin County, Ichun municipality, and the Jilin Province Skybridge Ridge Forest also found traces of wild north-east tigers. In the expert's view, these incidents are indicative of the further expansion of our north-eastern tiger habitat and of the importance of its conservation and rehabilitation. Conflicts between wildlife and humans persist. As human activities continue to expand, wildlife's living space is increasingly restricted and human contact is becoming more frequent.
In this context, the question of how to balance the protection of wildlife with the guarantee of human security becomes particularly important. In order to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents, we need to take measures to protect wildlife while ensuring human safety.
First, wildlife conservation and monitoring should be strengthened to increase awareness and understanding of wildlife. Secondly, the Government and the relevant authorities should intensify their advocacy efforts to alert the population to the presence of wildlife and educate them on how to live with it.
In addition, adequate wildlife protection laws and regulations should be put in place to strengthen the fight against illegal hunting and misuse of wildlife resources.
