In the context of urbanization, stray cats have become an important part of urban ecology. According to statistics, there are more than 30 million stray cats in China, who play an important role in maintaining ecological balance. But what are the ripple effects of the recent discussion about stopping feeding stray cats? The potential effects of stopping feeding will be analysed in depth.
First, the survival status of stray cats: The data reveal the cruel reality that the average daily intake of our urban stray cats is about 150 grams, depending mainly on human feeding. In 72 hours, 43 per cent of stray cats suffer from food shortages if they suddenly stop feeding (source: China Society for the Protection of Small Animals, 2023 report). A community experiment in Beijing revealed an average 18 per cent reduction in the body weight of stray cats and a high mortality rate of 27 per cent for young cats after five days of hunger.
Questions: How will these furry lives be maintained when the food chain breaks?
II. Health crisis: Stopping feeding the risk of disease transmission can trigger dramatic changes in the behaviour patterns of stray cats. Data from the Guangzhou Animal Hospital show a fourfold increase in aggressive behaviour by stray cats following food shortages and an increase in the prevalence of infectious diseases caused by mutual torn bites to 15 per cent. Worse still, stray cats are forced to turn to the waste disposal area for food, which increases the risk of infection by 3.2 times, for example, in virulent bacteria such as coli and hook spirals.
Eco-chain convulsions: As top predators, vagrant cats with uneven relationships between predators and prey can kill about 2 million rats a year. A sudden reduction in its number could lead to a proliferation of rats. Research by the Shanghai Center for Disease Control indicated that the risk of dengue transmission increased by 6.8 per cent for every 10 per cent increase in rat population. At the same time, the predator pressure of the natural enemies of stray cats (e.g. crows, foxes) will turn to birds and amphibians, destroying biodiversity.
IV. Community conflicts have been exacerbated by the “no feeding” policy in a small area of Shenzhen, where humanism and ethics have played a role, leading to the gathering of stray cats in garbage dumps, which has provoked strong discontent among the population. The survey showed that 68 per cent of the population supported “scientific feeding”, but only 29 per cent knew the correct feeding method. This cognitive fault may lead to more social conflicts and how to balance the right to life with public safety is a key issue.

Alternatives: Sustainable solution 1. Establishment of a feed registration system: a community in Hangzhou uses the Smart Feeder+APP Record model to accurately control feeding and increase the homeless cat health index by 40 per cent
Turning to specialized aid agencies: Chengdu's “Day of Adoption” data show that the cost of sterilization per stray cat is approximately $800 and that the government subsidy covers 60 per cent of the cost.

VI. Global experience: Japan has implemented the TNR+ community collaboration model in other countries, at an average annual cost of only $1,200 per stray cat; Singapore has introduced the Cat Cow + Auto Feeder portfolio to standardize 98 per cent of feeding. These cases show that scientific management is more effective than simple prohibitions.
