A few days ago, Liaoning Provincial Institute of Marine Aquatic Sciences rescued a cheesy seal pup weighing only 8.5 kg, “twixt round”, well below normal levels at the same age. After six months of careful care, the weight of the soup has increased to 38 kg, and it is expected that it will soon be released to the sea.
In February, a 25-year-old graduate of master's degree in veterinary medicine at Shenyang Agricultural University, she went to the Liaoning Provincial Institute of Marine Aquatic Sciences (hereinafter referred to as the Sea School) of the Liaoning Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences to work with rescue teams in the care and care of wildly scavengered seal cubs.
Every year, some of the wild-breeded seal cubs are separated from their mothers by broken sea ice and wind to shore, leaving them with very little chance of survival.
From the beginning of 2025 to the present time, the Sea Court has assisted a total of five flannel seal cubs, with the lowest body weight and the lowest body quality at the time of their admission, namely, “twixt round”. After careful care by the helpers, the condition of the soup is gradually improving, and the food is now able to fish, from the first passive consumption of fish slurry to the self-eating of fish; the hair of the body is gradually fading, with grey, black spots and waterproof hair. At the time of the interview, it had a weight of nearly 38 kg and was headed by five banded seals.
The rescue teams ensure the restoration of the independence of the seals through such checkpoints as wildlife training and health assessment. Each seal will wear a satellite beacon to study migratory patterns. The Western Pacific Seal is the only sea area in the country that breeds fin-foot animals, and the populations of the Bay of Liaodong are more protective because of genetic isolation. This rescue not only saved individual lives but also provided valuable data for marine ecological research.
