In recent days, a heartbreaking video has spread over the Internet: in a zoo in Jiangsu Salt City, a stray cat accidentally entered the tiger's garden and was brutally taken away and torn to pieces by an adult Northeast tiger, who ended up dying. From the surveillance footage to the photographs on the scene, every detail is filled with blood and a sense of weakness, which has caused considerable controversy throughout the network. Some deplored the innocence of the kittens, others accused the zoo of a security gap and others of the brutal laws of nature.
This short 10 seconds is the end of life and torture of humanity.
According to witnesses at the scene, the poor stray cat was suddenly planted in the tourist tour area. In a panic, it crossed the fence and entered the territory of the tiger. And the tiger, as a natural predator, faced with an “immediate visitor” who broke into his own territory, hunted as a genetic instinct. And when it bites the neck of a cat, it is swift and cruel, and it is unbearable. This incident was not so much an accident as a confluence of numerous coincidences that eventually resulted in tragedy.
So who is responsible for this tragedy?
First, the safe management of the zoo was undoubtedly pushed to the tip of the wind. Why is a stray cat so easy to get into the area of the Tiger Garden? This exposes possible gaps in safety protection at the zoo. Both the maintenance of the net and the frequency of daily patrols deserve serious scrutiny. If it was a kitten, would it be a bigger wildlife next time, even an intruder? There is nothing small about security, and any little loophole can have devastating consequences.
Secondly, we cannot ignore the problem of the management of stray animals. The tragedy of this cat reminds us once again that the survival status of stray animals is not promising. They are homeless and wandering, and not only are they threatened by hunger, disease and car accidents, but they can also have an impact on human society and, as in this case, on other animals.
Finally, how should we look at the tiger's behaviour when we return to the events themselves? Many people have seen videos that generate fear and aversion to tigers, and even believe that tigers are “too cruel”. But we must be sober about the fact that the hunting of tigers is by its nature and has nothing to do with the moral judgement of humanity. It's not “abuse”, it's “eating”. When we keep animals in cages to be seen, we cannot ask them to remain wild while looking at their behaviour with the moral standards of humanity.
This incident should not be a mere conversation after our tea, but rather a cause for respect for life, a wake-up call for security and a deep reflection on the relationship between man and nature. Every life deserves to be treated with kindness, whether it be a stray cat or a beast in a cage. It is hoped that this tragedy will serve as a wake-up call for the zoo to be better managed, for more people to focus on stray animals and for us to re-examine how we should live with animals.
